The Office (US)

The Office (US) 9 seasons (2005-2013) ★★★★

Minimalist poster by yours truly.

I started watching the series, an adaptation of the British series of the same name, 2 years ago because of an interest brought on by a pranks compilation video I’d seen on facebook and also- John Krasinsky, no explanations required.

The series is a mockumentary, the setting of a branch office of a Paper Company. The first season, which only has 6 episodes was received to mixed reviews, for me it was promising if not a bit over the top cartoony with the very annoying, Michael Scott (played by Steve Carell) who is the branch manager (more annoying than any boss you might have/had in real life.) He is insensitive, dim-witted and does not take his job seriously.

But it really was season two where things got a little more interesting, a more tolerable, better groomed version of the character comes forth, and slowly the other characters- like an assortment of good things, each shine in their own right. The writers of the show did their homework right, one could say. And Rainn Wilson’s Dwight Schrute is a very essential and complex character- competitive, lacking though, in social skills and common sense.

Between the craziness of these two characters, John Krasinsky’s Jim Halpert is your everyday, average, normal (by that I mean, only a little bit of crazy) guy and Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer), his counterpart. A lot of the talking-straight-to-the-camera scenes are with these two, because being the average humans, they share the same opinions as we audience do and at other times you see them in perspective- doing things the average salaried Americans do to survive and save for retirement. The other characters I loved were that of Mindy Kaling and B J Novak- who were also writers and Executive producers of the series.

I don’t have a great history of completing series, there have been very few ones I was motivated to and this is one of them. Although, I almost didn’t with seasons 8 and 9- following the departure of Steve Carell at the close of season 7, it was as if a major element of the series was missing, majorly felt in the penultimate season (yes I had begun to love the character and his eccentricities by season 3), while the final season was like a neat wrap up of the entire series, bow and everything.

If you’re in India, you can catch all 9 seasons on Primevideo.in
